Death Of A Salesman Illusion In An American Tragedy Essay

When the realities of life become too harsh, humankind has a natural tendency to choose the most convenient solution to his problem: illusion. They build dreams and fantasies to conceal the more difficult truths of their lives. In his play Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller portrays the hold of such illusions on individuals and its horrible consequences. Through the overly average, overly typical Loman family, Miller shows how dreams of a better life become, as Choudhuri put it, â€Å"fantasies to the point that the difference between illusion and reality, the Loman’s dreams and the forces of society, becomes blurred† (Choudhuri 70). The Loman family created dreams and illusions that were far better than their reality. In Death of a†¦show more content†¦Choudhuri explains that the mood of the play begins with dreams and longings of the heart, but ends with sorrow and disillusionment (Choudhuri 69). The play opens with, â€Å"A melody is heard, played upon a fl ute. It is a small and fine telling of grass and tress and the horizon†¦an air of the dream clings to the place† (Miller 1, 1). This set the mood of happiness surrounded by fantasy and illusion. In the end, the mood completely changes with, â€Å"Only the music of the flute is left on the darkening stage† (Miller 139, 2). These words complete the play with a darkened environment of disillusionment which perfectly accompanies the disillusionment of the characters. Choudhuri also points out that a certain irony also sets off the theme of disillusionment, projecting Willy’s idealism and then the starkness of his situation (Choudhuri 73). Linda tells Willy, â€Å"Will, darling, you’re the handsomest man in the world,† (Miller 31, 1) but she is interrupted by the laughter of Willy’s mistress. Willy gives his mistress stockings, and shortly after, Linda is seen mending some stockings of her own. Yet another example of this irony is in Act II. Willy expresses his opinion that Biff is spiteful and ruining himself, and then Miller shows Biffs’ shock at discovering his father’s adultery. The most apparent symbol of Willy’s fantasies and his eventual disillusionment is Miller’s use of flashback. Love also makes the story interesting to an audience of Shakespeares time; also to audiences of more modern times as people are still enjoying his work to this day. Love is particularly important in this play though as it runs all the way through; this allows many different aspects of love to be explored such as, the relationship between Romeo and Juliet which is an exciting new love relationship. On the other hand Shakespeare also shows that love can be cruel when Juliets parents are trying to get her to marry Paris against her will, they want her to marry for security. An audience in Shakespeares time would of been able to relate to this more than a more modern one, because in those days arranged marriages were much more common. Parents married their children off for security and money not everyone was able to marry for love. At the beginning of the play in the prologue Shakespeare gives a short synopsis telling the audience what is going to happen in the play, this creates dramatic irony that runs all the way through the play, because the audience have heard that Romeo and Juliet are going to die; but they dont know when they will, this creates tension and suspense. Having two people die to bring their families together allows Shakespeare to explore many different types of love. For example the love of the children who have died or the love between the feuding families tha t their deaths created. Early on in the play the audience is shown that Romeo is young and full of love, when he is infatuated with Rosaline. He is love sick and very hormonal, you can see this when he says Shell not be hit with Cupids arrow, He is talking to Benvolio about how he loves Rosaline but she doesnt feel the same way about him, which is why he feels love sick. Shakespeare creates many different relationships that make it easy to explore the Theme of love because he has many emotions flying round. One of these relationships is Romeo and friar Lawrences. Romeo doesnt seem to be able to talk to his parents and relies on the friar for advise and as someone to confide in, almost like a father figure. When Romeo and Juliet decide to get married the friar helps them do it secretly. The imperatives are also used to degrade the recruits and provide a very clear warning of the dangers of war. An example of this is, What are you laughing at you in the back with the unsightly fat between your elephant ears. Again the intention here is to intimate him, making him feeling really small and powerless. Also Bruce Dawe uses another imperative command, when the sergeant intimidate the soldiers , Why are you looking at me, are you queer? This is used to take away individual thinking, where they are forced to think as a group that obediently follows rders. The sergeants job in the army is to change the men into killing machines that have no emotions of killing another human being, because war is a life and death situation and it kill or be killed. In weapon training, Dawe also uses the technique of sexual innuendo. He does this to appeal the recruits masculinity and virility. The examples used in the poem are, Crown jewels and Key in the ignition. hence, Dawe is attempting to excite and worry the recruits by drawing their attention to their potential loss of their sexual organs and thus their manliness. Males general society are their to reproduce the population, and with out their male organs they cannot, representing them as not a man. By sexually making the recruits worry and scared, they will take war more seriously. Through out the poem, Dawe also uses colloquial language and idiomatic Australian expressions. He does this so we can identify our audience and get a greater understanding of the message he is sending. To truly understand many of the terms we need to have a solid understanding of the language as many of the terms are no longer used on a regular basis. They are typically Australian expression that do not have a significant relevance today. The tone of the poem is spoking in a colloquial manner that at times turns to insults. The terms such as, tripes, youve copped the bloody lot and womens tit are all examples of colloquial language that are designed to set a certain atmosphere. The speaker is addressing Australian recruits and is preparing them to fight against Asian enemy. The idioms also further cement the idea that this is an Australian contingent of recruits. He uses a variety of insulting language towards the new recruits. The purpose of the abusive and insulting language is to get the recruits to build hatred and ager against the Yellow Charles. The first episode in which we can examine Austen's attitudes to marriage is in chapter four. In chapter four we must notice that there is no direct speech, which shows that all of the narration is Austen, with her views and opinions being presented to us. When talking of Mr. Wentworth, Austen says ' He was a remarkably fine young man, with a great deal of intelligence, spirit and brilliancy' and of Anne 'an extremely pretty girl, with gentleness, modesty, taste and feeling.' In a novel so concerned with wealth and status we must notice that Austen makes no comment concerning the wealth of either. Austen says of Anne and Wentworth that 'they were gradually acquainted, and when acquainted, rapidly and deeply in love.' It would seem that Austen is implying that in English society you must either gain wealth or love from a marriage, as very rarely were both love and wealth gained. Another theme of the novel which seems to accompany the theme of marriage is that of the private and the public. Austen says of Anne and Captain Wentworth's togetherness 'A short period of exquisite felicity followed, and but a short one. Troubles soon arose. Sir Walter on being applied to thought it a very degrading alliance.' Austen here presents to us that when the public discover the news the relationship turns sour. Sir Walter by calling Anne and Wentworth's relationship an 'alliance' shows that he believes it should be no more than a business relationship. Austen's tone of 'He thought it a very degrading alliance' scorns this op... ... titles are measured and weighed in the consideration of marriage. In finality, Austen uses marriage in the novel as a social yardstick to measure and compare the characters in the novel. Austen?s tone is condemning when talking of marriages based on money, which on one hand shows her recognition of romance and sentimentalism but on the other can be seen as her bitterness for never finding love and marrying. She was outgoing, sarcastic, and witty in a time when women were supposed to be docile. She combats a typical stereotype through mocking, in The Standard of Living. In this story the average woman is shown, as silly and almost material person. I had never felt so good in my life. I earned my first pocket money when I was in high school. During school holidays, many students preferred to stay at home or go on holidays, but I wished to experience the school holidays differently this time. As soon as the school holidays started, I began to look for a part-time job. The first day of the holiday, I went to grocery stores and malls to look for a job. I saw a lot of places that wanted to hire part-time sales associates, and I decided to go into a clothing store.The store assistant gave me an application form to fill out. After I completed the application, the store supervisor came in and asked me some questions while she was checking my application. Unfortunately, she immediately declined my application because I was a student. I went to other stores and tried my best to get a job, but every time my application was rejected.
